For companies competition means they could lose market share and profit, unless they keep "improving" their product. So it's entirely seen as a threat to their bottom line. In FOSS competition means someone has produced a better application/distro than yours, making you want to improve yours. In *most* cases there are no monetary considerations only the respect and admiration of your peers. Both sides compete, but in different ways.
