Speaking as an old fuddy-duddy who bemoans the practice of not pulling up poor spelling at skool :-) People should be wary of quoting an encyclopedia when they should be consulting a dictionary... :- <http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/spell_1?view=uk> which is almost verbatim what my paper Concise OED says. Spelt is spelt correctly and used correctly.
