My PC is connected to a philips 234EL monitor via HDMI. Sound and video both go over the cable. So if I want I can use the speakers built into the screen. I happen to have a separate sound card connected to decent speakers so I don't use this feature, but it works out of the box on my machine. Here's a picture of the sound setting thing. I have highlighted the HDMI out and pressed test.
