Are you getting any error messages or notices when the machine is
trying to boot into normal mode?
Need a lot more information to make an educated recommendation.
I'm not sure whether you problem could be similar to issues I had on a
couple of previous upgrades where grub failed to install properly and
i was left at the grub rescue terminal. If so, the instructions to
reinstall GRUB2 may help on this page:

Something very strange.......using my windows machine, and found that it
could see the Ubuntu machine that is broken, so I clicked on it, it
opened the folders that I have opened up to share, so they dont seem to
have been damaged.....have clicked through them, and everything is
there, so if there is a problem, I can copy everything over to my
windows machine, and not loose anything, not thast there is much to
loose....
