It is supported, I'm running QSB Sound Science speakers here on 16.04.1.
​You will have to be specific about your audio device. ​
It's a bit of a pain to get set up sometimes though.
​ It took me an hour or so to track down the best way of doing it​.

​If your device isn't visible in Sound Settings (or in the Sound control panel) open a terminal and see if it's visible to aplay -l. If it isn't then it may not be supported, but that would unusual. The simplest solution is to install gstreamer, which should make it available to pulseaudio. If not, get the details of your device and we should be able to work out how to get it working.
