I've managed to resolve the partially installed package problem. As part of this, I've ended up running the kernel from jaunty-proposed.
Version 2.7.1 shows the same problem - a white screen after login. I've checked both with and without an external screen connected. I've attached the Xorg.0.log files with version 2.7.1, both working (without virtual) and non-working (with virtual).
