As a workaround, you can install 8.04 from 'alternate installer' (text-based installer) - downloadable from ubuntu site. This is the last version supporting old 'i810' driver, which works fine on 41xx Stylistics. Also, you can install 7.04 (and perhaps some olders) in the normal way - this is the last version which works from normal cd with graphical installer.
