Similar problem when using ATI driver, version 9.5 and Radeon 2600HD. Compiz is enabled.
$ lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV630 [Radeon HD 2600XT] Computer blanks out the screen and freezes. I cannot connect via SSH even.
