@Thomas Foss: I never had any freezes myself, even with compiz. But I had enourmous problems with my video card when switching between workspaces with many windows open, many audio streams, many flash videos running. Try and check if you feel a difference using the new patch. You can try using both compiz and metacity and give us your impression.
