Hardy has xserver-xorg-video-via but it doesn't work well, so I installed another driver for my via vn896, the driver is downloaded from http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action The driver works well in hardy but the lcd backlight does not turned on automatically when gdm start. I also can use compiz with this driver and some /usr/bin/compiz modification advised by this driver readme. When I installed intrepid, I did not find xserver-xorg-video-via again, but xserver-xorg-video-openchrome In jaunty, I found xserver-xorg-video-via, but the package is not contained the driver, just the /usr/share/doc files. And now I still use xserver-xorg-video-openchrome, that contained with openchrome driver that said it is for via vn896. But with openchrome driver, I can not use all my via vn896 feature.
