WORKAROUND: I enabled SWCursor at /etc/X11/xorg.conf as described at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome#Problems%20and%20solutions :
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "openchrome"
Option "SWCursor" "true"
EndSection
Now the horizontal colored bar does not appear any more.
