Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel
changed display settings of the extended lcd (from 800x600 to
1680x1050)- it asked me to re log in. after relogin - half of the
desktop is black on both lcds.

both the lcds were like that - the inner rectangle is the ubuntu
desktop & the outer rectangle is the lcd screen.
