Also i have "Warning: Could not generate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe
for vesa driver" error.
I have Ubuntu karmic with nvidia 8600 GT.
I try to reinstall gdm and i have applied the nvidia 185.18.14 patch correctly:

After error, if i login me from command line, i can start gdm after a
simple startx.
