Sorry for the many updates. I have read a few bug reports, initially thinking my problem had to do with the gnome-screensaver. Now I can confirm I had the same problem with my NVidia driver. I have an NVidia Geforce4 MX 4000 graphics card and the 96.43.17 NVidia driver installed, which came with Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-26-generic kernel). I manually updated to the 96.43.19 driver and the problem is gone. I made some changes so that other people can distinguish the NVidia driver bug and gnome-screensaver bug more easily.
