This affects me as well. I don't think it's related to nvidia since I have intel graphics on my laptop. killall gnome-panel fixes the problem. It's a painting problem but also a button sensitivity one. What I mean is, this problem appears somewhere in the icons area on the top-right and the buttons that happen to be hidden by another badly rendered part are insensible and cannot be pressed.
