Upstream indicates that it is a userspace application that triggers the
crash.

So that suggests this approach to debug:
* Identify an application that reliably causes the crash (such as gnome-panel 
or gnome-terminal)
* Terminate that process
* Restart it using strace, capturing output to a log file
* Reproduce the X crash
* Attach the strace to this bug report.

(Fwiw, I haven't been able to reproduce this bug myself... it would be
helpful if someone could better isolate the conditions and steps to
reproduce the problem.  Also maybe look for commonalities between
individuals experiencing the same issue, in case it is hardware-specific
in some sense.)
