Just finished installing 8.04. As described in http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-662667.html the initial X configuration does not produce a working X, however, with the xorg.conf given on that page X works just fine at 1024x768 with 24bit. So, the hardware is fine - just the xserver/driver in 9.04 seems to have problems.
