Thanks for your report. Did it work in a previous release? In that case it would be nice if you could provide an Xorg.0.log for instance by using a live CD of that release. It would be good if you can provide the xrandr info as explained on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/NonGraphicalBoot for a previous working release if any, as well as for the working vesa driver and the failing savage driver in Ubuntu 10.10. The instructions are given for a live CD, so on an installed system you will have to add "text" in the grub menu instead of in the CD start menu.
