… also, output from input-events (found in input-utils) for the mode
button. The kernel sees it (R.A.T. 7) as buttons 8, 9 and 10.

As root, or via sudo:
        lsinput

Note which eventN is used for the mouse, and use the number in the next 
command; here, it's currently 4. Also, hold the mouse off the pad, leaving its 
motion sensor clear. Again, as root or via sudo:
        input-events 4

Press the mode button three times, then let input-events time out.

(I expect that the R.A.T. 5 and 9 have the same button nos. as the
R.A.T. 7 – for the mode button, 0x118, 0x119 and 0x11A. I'm mostly
interested in the R.A.T. 3 here.)
