The problem has been introduced in 11.04. In 10.10 I could use the 8286SG GPU without any problem, it nicely operated in 3D mode and it turned the cube as expected. In 11.04 it does not recognize the 3D capabilities and use the gnome desktop but that one is not usable anymore.
