None of those had any effect:

luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS --auto
luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS --auto
luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --output VGA --off
luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS --auto
luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS --auto
luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --output VGA --off

Even 
luk...@eleonore:~$ xrandr --verbose --output VGA --off 
doesn't produce any output and both display are still on. 
arandr works very well though.
