Well the "artifacts" have ceased to become a problem. Several things have happened.
1) I patched glib2.0 to resolve the 2nd monitor operational problems. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/+question/77380 2) I discovered the obscure and onerous setting that was crashing compiz. https://answers.launchpad.net/compizconfig-settings-manager/+question/77591 3) I have enabled compiz and am using the emerald window decorator. I think the bug might be with the GTK window decorator.
