Dear Bryce,

Thanks for all your help and especially for identifying the chipset + 
driver as the problem.  The machine in question is in Italy where I go 
for the summer, so I can't test it until I get there (about July 1). 
However with the hand-made xorg.conf file supplied to me by Ubuntu, it 
does work (with 10.04).

At this point rather than test on natty I'd prefer to continue to work 
with what I've got, until I need to upgrade.  At that point I think I'll 
just invest in a new video card, might be the easiest thing.
