I am getting this issue frequently, but not every time I close the lid. My laptop is indeed plugged in, and the only solution thus far has been to pull up the terminal via ctrl-alt-F1 and force close Xorg. I find it important to note that this did not occur in any form until my upgrade to Natty.
Interestingly, I am also using an Intel 945 GM chipset and a dual-core 32-bit processor, but I am using a Dell Latitude d620.
