Please file a bug upstream with the request to re-add this feature if
you'd like it.  I wouldn't bother describing it as a regression; it's
been this way for quite some time now.  The old zaphod mode was a total
hack-around.  You will need to make the case about why you need it; most
of what zaphod did can be done using xrandr multi-head functionality
now; it's possible whatever end result you're aiming for can be attained
some other way.
