Same here, with Lenovo X61t. Not sure if it is related, but when booting out of
the dock, then docking, the screen is garbled:
 - LCD is 1024x768, monitor is 1280x1024
 - Only the monitor is enabled when docked (as expected)
 - On the monitor, only the bottom left corner is visible, with a size of
1024x768
 - The mouse pointer is able to travel outside the bottom left corner, on the
whole 1280x1024 surface (although not visible)
 - When clicking (by guessing the mouse pointer position) the ubuntu menu (top
left corner) or the session menu (top right corner) all sorts of artifacts
occur on the blacked out region.

Running the "monitors" application does not solve the problem. A gdm restart
does solve the problem. Playing with xrandr, using scripts that used to be able
to reconfigure the monitor setup automatically does not solve the problem. The
actual xrandr command line used is:
xrandr --fb 1280x1024 --dpi 86 --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --mode
1280x1024 --right-of LVDS1
