Otherwise I would have probably come up with a fix.
At some point I suspected that my session type was wrong, but since I used 
autologon I could not change it to test it. 
Therefore I turned autologon off and noticed that things started to work.

Sometimes it is just that simple.

BTW I still sometimes get "Oh no something has gone wrong"; although ubuntu 
does not have auto logon, gnome still has this.
If I get that clicking on logout will give me the gnome login screen again, it 
will still autologin and then things go ok.

I suspect this is a startup timing related issue, probalby between gnome and 
X11. 
If it matters, I have an i7-2600 with a hard disk (no ssd).
