The debugging information Chris Wilson is after can be gathered by
adding ‘drm.debug=0xe’ to your kernel command line - you can do that the
same way that you added “video=VGA-1:d”.  Once you've booted, and the
screen has flickered a bit, please grab dmesg and attach it here.

You should also be able to add “drm_kms_helper.poll=0” to your kernel
command line in /etc/default/grub if you want that work around to be
permanently enabled.
