Public bug reported: I updated from 10.04 to 11.10 a few hours ago (fresh install of 10.04, update to 10.10, 11.04 and then 11.10) and now I can't log into my account any longer. I'm entering the correct password for my account, press enter, the screen flickers and for a few seconds I can see tty7 as a terminal (so, instead of gdm or unity, I see log output). It then returns to the login screen.
The weird thing is that I'm able to log in as a guest user just fine. I'm filing this bug as a guest on my own laptop... Some information about my laptop: - Ubuntu 11.10 - Nvidia graphics card, running the "current" Nvidia driver - Acer TravelMate - Everything up to date Have a great day Tom ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.20-generic-pae 3.0.4 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-12-generic-pae i686 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia wl ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu3 Architecture: i386 CurrentDmesg: Error: command ['sh', '-c', 'dmesg | comm -13 --nocheck-order /var/log/dmesg -'] failed with exit code 1: comm: /var/log/dmesg: Permission denied Date: Wed Oct 12 22:57:10 2011 DistUpgraded: Log time: 2011-10-12 22:10:50.318439 DistroCodename: oneiric DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 2.6.38-11-generic-pae, i686: installed bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 3.0.0-12-generic-pae, i686: installed nvidia-current, 280.13, 3.0.0-12-generic-pae, i686: installed nvidia-current-updates, 280.13, 3.0.0-12-generic-pae, i686: installed GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 18) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:0414] nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 330M] [10de:0a29] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:0414] InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release i386 (20101007) JockeyStatus: kmod:wl - Broadcom STA wireless driver (Proprietary, Enabled, In use) [auto-install] xorg:nvidia_current - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) xorg:nvidia_current_updates - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (Proprietary, Enabled, In use) MachineType: Acer TravelMate8472TG ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic-pae root=UUID=b7e05573-7147-4157-a88f-64b0208ba520 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display Title: Xorg crash UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to oneiric on 2011-10-12 (0 days ago) XorgConf: Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo" "True" EndSection dmi.bios.date: 08/02/2010 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix dmi.bios.version: V1.10 dmi.board.name: BAP40-CP dmi.board.vendor: Acer dmi.board.version: Not Applicable dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: Acer dmi.chassis.version: N/A dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenix:bvrV1.10:bd08/02/2010:svnAcer:pnTravelMate8472TG:pvrNotApplicable:rvnAcer:rnBAP40-CP:rvrNotApplicable:cvnAcer:ct10:cvrN/A: dmi.product.name: TravelMate8472TG dmi.product.version: Not Applicable dmi.sys.vendor: Acer version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu3 version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.26-1ubuntu1 version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 7.11-0ubuntu3 version.libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental 7.11-0ubuntu3 version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 7.11-0ubuntu3 version.nvidia-graphics-drivers: nvidia-graphics-drivers N/A version.xserver-xorg: xserver-xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7 version.xserver-xorg-input-evdev: xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu13 version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.14.99~git20110811.g93fc084-0ubuntu1 version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2 version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110411+8378443-1 ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug crash i386 oneiric running-unity ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873084 Title: Xorg crash after entering password To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/873084/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
