Notice that tearing is only visible on the laptop's own screen. If you attach an external monitor, the desktop on that one won't show any problem. If both monitors are active, only the laptop's one will show the problem, while the external one won't. I tried this with an old Samsung SyncMaster 171s LCD connected via an analog VGA port. Can't test what might happen with a DVI connection.
