Just to add another minor detail. After the mouse freezes, its shape still changes depending on the active window. For instance, if I Alt+Tab to a text editor it takes the cursor shape and disappears (as it should) after I start typing. After I Alt+Tab to a browser it appears again and takes the shape of the arrow pointer.
