it seems that the backlight gets turned off. i can use the "increase
screen brightness" button on the keyboard to turn the screen back on.
similarly via sysfs:

cd /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/
sudo chmod a+w brightness


xrandr -s 1 ; grep -H . *brightness ; sleep 3 ; cat max_brightness > brightness 
; grep -H . *brightness
actual_brightness:0
brightness:0
max_brightness:494
actual_brightness:494
brightness:494
max_brightness:494

with this, the screen is black for the 3 seconds and then is turned back
on. takilaci, does that also work for you?
