Public bug reported: I'm encountering a problem when trying to use my Dell E6400 laptop (i915 video chipset) with an external DisplayPort monitor (DELL3007WFPHC via an Apple DP->DVI active adapter).
It works fine if I boot up with the monitor connected, but if I start without it and then plug it in while the X server is running, it completely locks up X. When I remove the monitor, X starts working again and I can continue as if nothing had happened. I have tested things while only running a basic X server/xterm and the problem still happens as soon as the monitor is plugged in. I have tested the following scenarios: X running --> plug-in monitor = freeze X running --> plug-in monitor --> (freeze) --> unplug monitor = unfreezes X stopped --> plug-in monitor = works (monitor mirrors text console) X stopped --> plug-in monitor --> start X = works (mirroring/separate/different resolutions/etc all work fine via gnome settings) (freeze) --> unplug --> (unfreeze) --> stop X --> plug-in --> start X = works (freeze/unfreeze does not appear to have any lasting effects on behavior) Please let me know if there's any additional info I can provide that would be of assistance.
