@alezflute i just tried it, didn't work!

All manual install versions i've tried jammed at or before starting
lightdm.

As a matter of procedure (maybe someone can pitch in some tips) i did the
following:
1. killed the current lightdm from virtual console
2. ran installer
3. got an initial error stating "precleanup distribution provided scripts
failed do you want to continue driver install anyway"
4. i went ahead and had an error-less install
5. at the end it complained not finding libGL.so.1 / libGLcore.so.1 and
libGL.tls.so.1 and proceeded to create them as symlinks to it's own versions
libGL.so.173.14.31 (i presumed it was looking for them in order to
remove/replace them with the symlinks it made)
6. rebooted got stuck
7. entered virtual console and erased /etc/X11/xorg.conf
8. rebooted

This seamed to work each time i tried a new driver version.
