I'm not sure I really understand it as well as I thought.

In Unity 2D, i get really bad video playback unless I can force the app
to use the "Video Overlay" xv adapter.

And for example, in smplayer, I get  blue window when it starts up,
which I guess is from the "Video Overlay".

When I switch back to Unity 3D, I get good performance and the blue
background using "Video Overlay".

But I also get good performance, and no blue background, (again in
smplayer) using the default xv, or using "Textured Video".

So I really have no idea why the performance is worse in Unity 2D.
