The split and the naming follows Debian. You might check if the information the System Info panel needs can't just be queried directly from X. We've dealt with several situations so far where various things were depending on parsing glxinfo which were able to get the info more efficiently just making the appropriate C call. Dunno if that's relevant in your case but might be worth checking first.
