I too have this issue. On Precise I have installed fglrx through Jockey, but in system settings>details it still says vesa. I do now know if the fglrx driver is in fact running, but I have 3D acceleration and glx gears reports 60fps. Also, I can effectively change color settings VIA amdcccle.
