Earlier this morning, while adjusting the graphic settings of a windows game
(Swat 4) running within wine, the screen artifacted and locked up. The computer
was completely unresponsive to the keyboard and mouse, so I manual restarted
it. After this restart the backlight of the screen was on, but there was no
image. The bios splash refused to appear as with everything else and so it
would appear that the problem is in the graphics card. The computer was
thinking away and appeared to be in full working order otherwise.
After a couple of hopeful restarts, I plugged an external monitor in, which
mostly works.
During the ubuntu screens at start up and shut down there are vertical green
bars, ubuntu would only start X in safe graphics mode.
Once the X session is loaded in safe mode, the computer is useable and the
green bars are gone.
Once using the functional operating system, one of the first things I did was
copy the /var/log folder, which is the attached archive. The error occurred at
approximately 1:30am 14th March

The laptop is a Dell Vostro 1400,
Intel Core 2 Duo T7250
Nvidia 8400m GS
Running ubuntu 8.10 x86_64
Proprietary Nvidia driver (version 177) as distributed

I don't know if software is to blame for the error, and if it is, what
software to look at. I will keep the laptop as is for a few weeks, in
case somebody requests more information. Thanks

** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-177 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
