As Chase Douglas said, reloading the usbhid module will get it working.

You can put this into a script to be called by pm-utils. I've provided
the instructions on how to do so in this Ubuntu Forums thread:

You'll just need to edit the script so it reloads the right module, so;
replace 'usbhid' with 'bcm5974' or whatever module you're using for the
trackpad :)
