Public bug reported: New Ubuntu 12.04 beta system installed as Gnome-based. XFCE environment is preferred as Window manager, though.
When booting and logging in for the first time directly with XFCE chosen, the desktop creation gets stuck as soon as the multiple virtual screens should be shown in the respective sidebar. Only first screen is displayed, and every opened window is placed in the top left corner, without window manipulation handles. Leaving XFCE is only possible via the kill key combination (Alt-Print-K). If, after booting, a Gnome environment is chosen for the first login, then left immediately, and then the 2nd login is an XFCE one, everything seems to work alright. Once arrived in the working XFCE environment, even frequent stand-by operation is working okay. The detour via the first Gnome login seems to be an effective workaround but is a real nuisance.
