ok. there is a workaround, to get unity 3d running.
use the open source drivers nouveau. uninstall all nvidia drivers. install 
nouveau firmware from synaptic.
then sudo gedit /etc/environment
and add this line: UNITY_FORCE_START=1
save, reboot and you should be able to log into unity 3d .

notice it is a workaround, the performance on the nouveau drivers might not be 
good.
i'm using this, while waiting for the 173 driver or hoping the new drivers will 
support my go 7300.
