I decided to go try downgrading some libraries to Oneiric to see whether kwin will stop crashing, and indeed, after downgrading this set of libraries to the ones from Oneiric:
libx11-6_1.4.4-2ubuntu1_i386.deb libxdamage1_1.1.3-2_i386.deb libxext6_1.3.0-3_i386.deb libxfixes3_5.0-4_i386.deb libxi6_1.4.3-3ubuntu1_i386.deb libxrandr2_1.3.0-3_i386.deb libxrandr2_1.3.2-2_i386.deb libxrender1_0.9.6-2_i386.deb kwin no longer crashes.
