I have managed to narrow down the issue I think. Xorg seems to only
crash when the cursor is on the screen that is being disconnected. If I
have my cursor on the laptop screen before disconnected everything is
fine. Furthermore, if the cursor is on the screen, the workaround is to
go into display settings and disable the second screen first. Unplugging
the hdmi cable without first disabling screen (in my case a tv) using
gnome display settings. The same thing on Arch Linux.  I hope this helps
get this bug fixed.
