The original report was on a desktop with an ATI Radeon video adapter running Lucid. I gave up on that system.
Now, on a Precise amd64 installation on my primary laptop that has an Nvidia GEForce Go 7600 and the nvidia drivers I've hit the same issue several times today (23 April 2012) after early-morning package upgrades. It seems to be provoked mostly when I switch VTs.
