This bug was partially fixed in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5.1. Most suspend/resume cycles will complete successfully now. However, about 10-20% of the time the trackpad will stop working properly. There are two more patches for xserver-xorg- input-synaptics and one for xorg-server to fully resolve this issue. These are noted in comment #46.
