I just remembered that I have a modified xorg.conf file. I have changed my AccelMethod to UXA (Ubuntu Juanty 64 bit). This was because under the default setting, the terminals in gnome were unusable for me as the scrolling speed was too slow. Using UXA the terminals are normal and much faster.
