I don't know why it works, but as a temporary fix I am now using the VGA port on my monitor instead of the DVI port, with a VGA cable, that is connected to the DVI port on my video card using a VGA-to-DVI adapter. With this setup, I have full monitor resolution. I just won't work if I connect to the DVI port of the monitor.
