I'm having the same problem on a Quadro FX3700 card running 295.40. It seems this applies to specific cards, I have an ATI/AMD card and an Intel card at home, which don't have this issue and run very stable.
I'm looking at moving 30+ machines to Ubuntu 12.04 (15 of which have the Quadro FX3700 card).
