You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I presume the bug is in xorg since it affects everything - even the
Ubuntu boot screen.

As the summary says, only a small portion of the screen is used. It's
not that it's invisible - the mouse pointer, all UI elements etc. stops
at the edge - it's simply as if my screen is tiny.

To clarify: My physical screen is now divided up into four parts, only
the top left of which is used by Ubuntu, the rest are black or filled
with more or less interesting colors. Ubuntu behaves as if my display
consisted solely of its top left corner and displays accordingly.

Bug was not a problem in 10.11
