For me, simply using: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/i386/nvidia-current/290.10-0ubuntu2 solves the problem as mentioned in #15
Also available: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/amd64/nvidia-current/290.10-0ubuntu2 I have installed it with: sudo dpkg -i nvidia-current_290.10-0ubuntu2_i386.deb and have locked the version in synaptic.
